2010 was a remarkable year for AIP Foundation, as we launched the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative in five countries, spreading our mission of universal helmet use throughout the developing world. The Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative has already been recognized internationally for its early accomplishments, and we received the first Road Safety Award from the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme in December. Greig Craft Receives First Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme Road Safety Award
"This is the first road safety award ever made by the FIM and reflects our concern about the global crisis arising from road traffic crashes," said Vito Ippolito, FIM President. "AIP Foundation's pioneering achievements in the area of child helmet use, and especially its innovation and creation of the affordable 'tropical' helmet, have demonstrated unparalleled leadership and solutions." The Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative was founded in 2009 by the AIP Foundation, FIA Foundation, and World Bank Global Road Safety Facility with the goal of bringing successful models for road safety programs to developing countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Road safety expert Robert Klein Joins the Global Helmet Vaccine InitiativeHanoi, Vietnam, 1 January 2011 The Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative has appointed Robert Klein, a renowned international road safety expert, as its Global Development Director. “Rob Klein’s extensive experience in leading APEC, World Bank and ADB projects will be a key asset to the Initiative.” says CEO Greig Craft. “His commitment to our involvement in the UN’s Decade of Action for Road Safety, to be launched in May, will play a lead role in developing regional and global road safety initiatives.” As the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative’s Global Development Director, Klein will focus on establishing partnerships and strategic planning. Prior to joining the Initiative, Klein held numerous senior road safety positions with Australian Government agencies VicRoads and the Australian Road Research Board, and more recently as the Asia Regional Director of the Global Road Safety Partnership.
News UpdateThe National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) recently published data showing that there were 13,713 reported road traffic crashes nationwide in 2010 that led to 11,060 reported deaths and 10,306 reported injuries. These figures represent a 16 percent increase in road traffic crashes since 2009, a 0.3 percent decrease in fatalities, and a 35 percent increase in injuries. The government’s goal for 2011 is to reduce traffic fatalities by 3 percent. For more information, please see the full article here. PHOTOVOICE uses photography as a medium to promote social change and improve quality of life in the community and has been implemented globally by Safe Kids Worldwide.

News UpdateBetween Dec 29 2010 and Jan 3 2011, 325 people were killed and 3,453 injured on Thailand’s roads, illustrating the enormity of this public health crisis. The Thai government has designated 2011 the “Year of the Crash Helmet” with the goal of reaching 100 percent helmet use to reduce traffic fatalities. News UpdateSiem Reap, Cambodia, 3 November 2010 The National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) has created a national strategy to correspond with the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 that will include focus areas such as helmet use and drink driving. If properly implemented, the plan would save 5,000 lives over 10 years. The plan currently awaits the Prime Minister’s approval. For more information, please see the full article here. Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative Representatives Visit CambodiaPhnom Penh, 17-19 January 2011 Representatives from the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative, including AIP Foundation and CDC staff, visited Cambodia in January to plan upcoming Cambodia Helmet Vaccine Initiative activities. In February, Road Safety Goodwill Ambassador Michelle Yeoh will visit Cambodia to film a documentary highlighting road safety challenges with the FIA Foundation, also a member of the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative steering committee.
