August 30, 2023

Songkhla, Thailand – August 30, 2023

In an effort to contribute to the target of Sustainable Development Goal 3.6 to halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes, the Chevron Street Wise program will celebrate a Road Safety Week 2023 for eleven primary schools from across Songkhla, Province in Thailand at Wichianchom school.

This immersive learning week aims to teach students all about road safety and mobility. The activities include friendly competitions to encourage students to learn about road safety as well as the selection of student ambassadors to advocate for safer roads. The week will also include a training day with local officials from the Transportation office, the provincial police, and the Department of Disaster Management and Mitigation. In total, 250 Student Ambassadors will be participating. Nearly 2000 students will celebrate road safety week.
“In order to ensure the sustainability of safe mobility in our community, we need to empower our youth. The students here today are the ones who will build the future of Songkhla province. It is our duty to inspire them from a young age,” shares Mr. Mahamaphiskri Wamae, Vice Governor of Songkhla Provice, Thailand.

The Wichianchom school is the model school of the Chevron Street Wise program in Songkhla province. It is located in a city with dense traffic. This unsafe environment highly impacts the commuting of vulnerable road users, including school children and pedestrians. Students come to schools by different means – 45% by motorcycles, 5% walk to school, 55% use public transport, omnibus, and by parent cars. Throughout the implementation of the program, students are learning mobility skills and awareness that promote safer journeys to school and that they can spread in their communities.

Safer mobility with the Chevron Street Wise program in Thailand
Chevron Thailand has partnered with AIP Foundation since 2014 to implement the Chevron Street Wise program to create a safer environment for road users – especially young children – through education, awareness-raising, as well as stakeholders and community engagement. During the project’s implementation, more than 8,000 students demonstrated improved road safety knowledge and skills, and approximately 1,500,000 parents, teachers, and community members benefited from road safety education and communication activities.

The Chevron Street Wise program is inherently aligned with the Global Agenda as part of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 – 2030 and Thailand’s National Road Safety plan. At the core of this program, all activities engage our youth to be a part of the solution to empower their community to be safer road users, thus giving them access to safe mobility.

“Chevron Thailand is proud to work with AIP Foundation and local government partners in Songkhla province for nine years to promote safe access to education for students. The Chevron Street Wise program has a proven track record of successfully safeguarding vulnerable students on their way to school,” shares Ms. Pornsuree Konanta, Vice President, Corporate Affairs from Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production, Ltd.
