Giving Cambodian factory workers a voice: “Speak Up” campaign in full swing

December 29, 2020

KAMPONG SPUE, Cambodia – December 29, 2020

Over 80 factory workers across three factories, in Svay Rieng, Kandal, and Kampong Spue provinces, participated in AIP Foundation’s “Speak Up” campaign. The campaign provides a platform, which empowers factory workers to address safety issues that they experience on a daily basis to management.

In the workshop, participants agreed upon a compliance mechanism and contact, as well as, established criteria to select a “Speak Up Champion” that would serve as an advocate on behalf of workers. After a thorough open discussion, all parties identified key commuting safety issues faced by workers with a path for future action to improve road safety.

“Speak Up” is one component of the larger Commuting Safety for Factory Workers program, funded by Solidarity Centre through USAID. Local government officials, factory management, as well as, police and worker representatives attended the workshop that AIP Foundation staff facilitated.

The Speak Up campaign has only just begun – AIP Foundation will identify commuting safety issues and begin building consensus for the campaign across all participating factories until late January with activities planned until 2022.
