SONGKHLA, Thailand – December 24, 2024

In a major step towards enhancing road safety in the region, Songkhla Province officially opened the Road Accident Prevention and Reduction Operation Center as a way to kickstart the provincial road safety campaign for the New Year 2025. Local officials, community members, and youth ambassadors from the Chevron Street Wise program who are committed to road safety attended the event.

The ceremony was chaired by Mr. Witthaya Chansaena, the Deputy Governor of Songkhla Province, who expressed his strong support for the ongoing efforts to reduce road crashes, particularly during the holiday season. The establishment of the operation center marks a key initiative in the province’s commitment to improving road safety through active community involvement.

A highlight of the ceremony was a lively chorus performance titled “Songkhla Charm” by students from Wichianchom School, which is one of the Road Safety Model schools as part of the Chevron Street Wise program.

The opening ceremony also featured a presentation by the Chief of the Songkhla Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, who detailed the goals of the newly launched center. The center will serve as a hub for emergency response, prevention strategies, and community education, especially during the busy festival season when road traffic increases.

Special attention was given to the Road Safety Ambassadors from the Chevron Street Wise program, who were recognized for their efforts in promoting road safety awareness among their peers. These student ambassadors have been instrumental in spreading the message of safe and sustainable mobility.

The event also included a visit to the exhibition in the Center, where attendees could explore various road safety initiatives and learn about the resources available to the public. The focus on youth involvement in the campaign was evident, with several student-led presentations showcasing their road safety knowledge and initiatives.

The opening of the Road Accident Prevention and Reduction Operation Center is not only a significant milestone for Songkhla Province but also a testament to the power of youth engagement in creating safer communities. As part of National Disaster Prevention Day 2024, the initiative encourages young people to take an active role in preventing crashes and promoting road safety within their wider communties.
